The tomtom GO 930 was purchased because it has both USA and European maps. I looked at the Garmin equivalent at a Garmin Store the Nuvi 770 and when typing in addresses found the keys were off. I have no idea if this is common but figured if they were that way in their store perhaps there would be a problem. The 930 finds its GPS signal extremely quickly, and gives a number of options such as fastest route, quickest route, bicycle and walk. The preference screen allows an almost unlimited way of customizing. I have only used it around the Chicago area and have found the maps to be accurate. I have found one quirk: in the Western Suburbs street numbers sometimes have a letter in them such as 1 N 123. I have not found a way to enter this and calls to TomTom’s help desk take almost an hour to be answered. Neither of these is appreciated. A work around the street address is to find the cross street which can be looked up on Google Maps and navigate to that intersection. I have not used it in Europe nor areas beyond the Chicago region. If I were to purchase a GPS now, I would still purchase this unit.

I was torn between a TomTom Go 930 and Nuvi 755T/775T. I needed both North American and European maps and liked the idea of lane assist, while traffic information was not that important. After reading many reviews and comparing prices I decided to purchase a TomTom Go 930. I was a little concerned because some of the very negative reviews I read about the quality of the maps and of problems with updating maps or contacting service representatives. In addition, I purchase a 4 GB card because a reviewer commented that he could not install the updated European map on the internal memory and a holder that attaches to vent.

So far this has been a great unit. It started up fine and is easy to use right out of the box. It locked onto seven satellites even inside my house. On my first test drives, the 930 calculated sometimes a different way than I normally drive, but it recalculated the directions very quickly if I chose a different route. I am not sure if the TomTom route was better or worse, but it certainly got me to the right location in a timely fashion. It is also very easy to choose an alternative route either through a specific location, choosing a specific road, avoiding a road (I have not tried this) or having the GO recalculate another route. The directions are clear and given well in advance and then right before making the turn. If you miss the instructions you can press the turn arrow and it is repeated. I selected to have the street name pronounced which is only possible when using the computer voice. It works very nice and I had not problems understanding the directions. So for me it did the most important thing, get me where I want to go. It also seemed to work well with one-way streets. I had an issue once with using a Garmin in Boston where it suggested that I should go against one-way streets, it was not my gps so I do not know how old the map was or what the settings were.

I’ve used the GO 930 for about a month and am satisfied overall. I love the feature that allows me to back into the departure time, based on anticipated length of travel (Of course one has to anticipate rush hours, etc. and add time on for that). The maps are up to date, and the graphics are good. I would have liked to be able to change the font size for street names. The computer generated voice breaks up as its “speaking” sometimes, and the pronunciations are often hilarious, but usually useful.

Hello,
I have recently moved in USA and it is a big challenge to drive in USA w/out efficient and reliable GPS. As soon as I landed, I bought Tomtom 930 because Tomtom is very famous in Europe. Just recently, I have bought Garmin 680 for my wife and I have been using for for 3 days and can make proper evaluation despite time is short to make an accurate evaluation:
PROS and CONS of Tomtom 930 & Garmin 680
1. Tomtom is a lot more user friendly with remote control.
2. You can find the locations with Zip Codes (I have not seen such spec in Garmin yet at least)
3. Tomtom’s guidance is a lot better in complex areas (And with Lane help, it is even better).
4. Tomtom’s map is not as good as Garmin’s at least for USA. Garmin can find more destinations and more side streets. Tomtom is great only if you don’t need every single street in each and every city.
